Sugar Land - Southwest Houston City Guide
Experience the Sweetness of Sugar Land
Named for the sugar mill and refinery that originally occupied a large section of town, Sugar Land has seen a massive transformation from blue-collar, self-contained community to white-collar Houston suburb in just a few decades. CNN ranked Sugar Land third among the “100 Best Cities to Live,” and people seem to agree. The city has annexed several surrounding communities in recent years, making it one of the safest and fastest-growing cities in Texas and the United States.
Entertainment
Sports fans rejoice – theres no need to make the trek into Houston. Sugar Land is home to great minor league athletics in the Houston Aeros (hockey) and Sugar Land Skeeters (baseball). And if you cant get enough of your Astros, Rockets and Texans, downtown Houston is only a half-hour away. But why deal with the hassle of parking and traffic? Make an event out of it – rent a party bus or limo with a group of friends and enjoy major league fun in your very own tailgate on wheels.
Sugar Land also features the First Colony Mall, located at the intersection of Route 59 and State Highway 6. Bookworms, movie buffs and techies unite – Sugar Lands main shopping destination features retail stalwarts like Barnes & Noble, AMC Theatres and an Apple store. Its an already sweet shopping experience made even sweeter in the southern comfort of Sugar Land.
Dining
Need a break from all the shopping? Of course you do. Luckily, First Colony Mall offers a variety of cuisine sure to satisfy any craving. Grimaldis Pizzeria, Black Walnut CafĂ© and The Cheesecake Factory might be the obvious choices, but what if youre in the mood for something a little different? Enter Japaneiros Sushi Bistro and Latin Grill, with sushi staples like the Volcano Roll and house specialties like the Spicy Sugarland. For more of a Latin flavor, try classic entrees like churrasco and pollo magro (“skinny chicken”). Its open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late at night to quench your hunger anytime. And just in case you were wondering – we know you were – Japaneiros Happy Hour is from 3 pm - 6 pm.
Sugar Land has long outgrown its industrial roots and traded them in for a more affluent atmosphere, making it a Houston-area hotspot to raise a family and a great standalone stop on any trip to southeast Texas.
